New service could link buenos aires and montevideo by train

Leaders in Argentina and Uruguay took the first steps to inaugurating a new rail link between their two countries this week, in a move that could make travel around South America far easier.

On August 29 Argentina's President Cristina Fernández met Uruguayan counterpart José Mujica to launch a new project to launch regular passenger services between their respective countries, beginning with a new route set to start next week.

The meeting took place at Salto, the site of a historic link between the two countries which the presidents reinaugurated.

Railway Gazette reports that the new route will cover some 810 kilometers between Pilar in Buenos Aires and Paso de los Toros in Uruguay, beginning with weekly services which will switch to daily in December.
