Revealed: australia's most liveable city

Melbourne may be ranked the world's most livable city by The Economist Intelligence Unit, but ask Australians about their own cities and Adelaide comes out on top.

Canberra comes in second, with Melbourne and Perth vying for third, while Darwin just edged out Sydney to be ranked as our worst city for quality of life.

The rankings were listed in the Property Council of Australia's My City: The People's Verdict, a survey of 5,231 people across all capital cities as well as Newcastle and Wollongong. The survey, which was conducted by Auspoll for the Property Council, comes as the Council launches a new campaign to engage community input and participation in planning how communities should grow.

Property Council national policy director Ken Morrison says the results of the survey should encourage governments at all levels to take appropriate action to raise the performance of Australian cities.

"This is the people's verdict on their own city, the ultimate report card for policy makers on how livable our cities are," Morrison says. "Australians know what makes a great city and they rate our cities poorly in housing affordability, environmental sustainability, congestion and public transport."
