New york airports study expansion possibilities

The agency that operates the New York City-area airports says it's looking for ways to expand capacity and reduce delays. The Associated Press reports the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey "is now reviewing proposals for an 18-month study on the issue. The Federal Aviation Administration will pay part of the cost."

AP notes a January report "by the Regional Plan Association recommended building an additional runway at either Newark Liberty or Kennedy. But it warned that construction at Kennedy might require filling in parts of the federally protected Jamaica Bay." Similarly, adding a runway at Newark would likely be challenging since that airport is largely surrounded by urban and industrial development.

Flight delays have become a chronic problem at the city's three big airports -- LaGuardia, JFK and Newark -- often causing flight delays to ripple to other cities around the nation.
