Egypt cancels daylight saving time

The Egyptian Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Essam Sharaf, has endorsed a decree law canceling daylight saving time. Clocks would have gone ahead one hour from the last Friday of April.

Daylight saving time was first adopted in 1988 as a way to reduce electricity consumption. The ministry of electricity and energy has submitted a study to the Cabinet revealing that implementing daylight saving time has no impact in this regard.

In Egypt the standard time is GMT (UTC) + 2 and during the Daylight Saving Time, Egypt is GMT + 3. The DST had started at midnight on the last Thursday of April and ends on the last Thursday of September.
